Coaching Tip: Wear Socks, Where?
Triathlons often start on the sandy shore of an ocean or lake, since the race starts with the swim. The ground may be rocky, grassy, sandy, and wet. Triathletes stand around in their wetsuits, waiting for the gun to go off or for their swim wave to start, and it can get chilly. The sand is usually much colder than the water. Standing on cold sand means cold feet. An athlete doesn’t want to feel uncomfortable or to have his/her body use energy warming itself any more than necessary. You will use enough energy during the race! You’ve already turned in your morning clothes bag or given your sherpa your belongings to hold. Now what?
I used those throw away shoes from a pedicure for a few races, but that left my toes cold. Then I started using socks! I purchase men’s white, tube socks for my feet and for my arms. I slit the ends (the toe area) so I can put a pair of socks on my arms from my wrists to my upper arm and still use my hands. I also have a pair of socks on my feet, ankles, and lower legs. In addition to this, you can use the plastic bags you might use to put on your wetsuit to keep your feet even warmer and dry. It’s not about style at this point; it’s about being smart.
